WHY SO SERIOUS?

In Why So Serious I was challenged by my study to create a design that would represent me as a designer. As I have mentioned earlier, I value humor. I wanted to convey that you shouldn't always take yourself too seriously and that life and art doesn't always have to be serious. It also functions as a reminder to myself, because I struggle with anxiety and perfectionism.

Why So Serious? is a crossword puzzle containing words relating to Communications and Multimedia Design. I chose this to make it fun and relatable for my fellow students. Once solved, the remaining letters will spell "Draai mij om", which means: "Turn me around." When you turn around the white board, you are met with a Spotify code leading to Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up". This song is commonly known as a "Rick Roll", a kind of prank song. This leaves you with no solution and a reminder that sometimes it just isn't that serious.

When I first got the idea for the crossword, my plan was to make it on this tiny whiteboard. Ironically, I thought it was too small and not "perfect" enough. It also wasn't visually pleasing.

This is why I opted for the large whiteboard instead. Additionally, I drew all the letters in permanent marker so that the puzzle could be solved more than once. I wanted my design to be able to be experienced by multiple people.
